Twisted underground films to blow your mind at Noise Market

Local, international, abstract. Specific, bizarre, confronting.

That’s how organisers describe the upcoming Bangkok Underground Cinema, which will screen various short films produced by independent and student filmmakers. There is no specific theme — the genres range from animation, sci-fi, and documentary, all the way to drama, experimental, and video art. Some films bill themselves as so indie that they don’t fit into a particular genre.

Over the weekend, the festival will screen 43 short films from 14 countries, including Thailand, Myanmar, Australia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Slovakia, Japan, Colombia, Switzerland, France, Russia, Korea, Singapore and Brazil.

Highlights include “HUU,” a film created by a “sound artist”; “Iblis Jalanan,” a documentary on the dangerous lives of motorcyclists; and “Pregnant Man,” a short summed up by its title. Then there’s “A Souvenir from Switzerland”, the story of an Afghan filmmaker-turned-refugee; and “Je te hais”, an animation about the nature of relationships.

The screenings will be held at the artsy Noise Market at Museum Siam this weekend. Entry is free for both the pop-up market and the cinema.

This event is only a teaser to the Bangkok Underground Film Festival next year, that promises to be bigger and even better.
