Hit-and-text driver to pay THB20 million for 9 lost lives

Praewa, 17 at the time, was photographed texting after her car crashed into a taxi van in 2010

The Civil Court this morning ordered the infamous hit-and-text driver to pay THB20 million to the families of the nine victims who died in a car crash she caused in 2010.

Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin Na Ayudhya will have to dig deep into her pockets to pay for nine lost lives in the accident in which she crashed into a taxi van and sent it plummeting from an elevated expressway. She was 17 years old at the time and had not reached the legal age to drive.

The families of the victims filed a lawsuit and demanded the former teen driver to pay THB120 million after criminal proceedings ended in May with Praewa spared from serving a single day in jail as the public raised questions over whether justice had been served.

In 2012, a court sentenced Praewa to two years in prison, commuted from three years which were ruled out by a three-year probation. She was also ordered to do 48 hours of community service and banned from obtaining a driver’s license until she is 25 years old, which must have been really tough for her.

Later in April 2014, the Appeals Court sentenced Praew to two years’ imprisonment, but gave her four years’ probation with an additional 48 hours of community service.

The criminal proceedings ended in May this year when the Supreme Court rejected her appeal and upheld the punishment given by the Appeals Court, which marked the end of this infamous case and hours of community service, Nation TV reported.
