Blankety blank: New York Times censored AGAIN by Thai printer

More empty pages for Thailand’s newspapers as printers have redacted yet another article from the International New York Times – the SECOND time this week.

Today’s edition in Thailand appeared with a blank space on the opinion pages after the INYT’s local printer refused to publish an editorial on what they said was a “sensitive issue”.

The space where the op-ed should have appeared showed just the following words:”The article in this space was removed by our printer in Thailand. The International New York Times and its editorial staff had no role in its removal.”

The newspaper said the incident showed “a regrettable lack of press freedom” in Thailand, according to Khaosod English.

“Readers in Thailand do not have full and open access to journalism, a fundamental right that should be afforded to all citizens,”  INYT spokeswoman Eileen Murphy told Khaosod English.

The Thai edition of the newspaper also appeared with blank spaces on Tuesday when the local printer, Eastern Printing, refused to print an article on the state of the Thai economy.

And in September the printer refused to publish the entire newspaper because it said the edition was “too sensitive to print”.

The articles remain accessible online.

Yuth Chinsupakul, Eastern Printing chairman, told Thai media today that that when the firm checked the newspaper due to be published this morning it found “the headline and article had a sensitive issue,” so they refused to print it.

Last month The International New York Times said it would cease printing in Thailand altogether by the end of the year, citing rising production costs.
