Hello heavy traffic: 4,000 cars bought on Father’s Day

As Father’s Day marked an auspicious day in the Thai calendar, a staggering total of 4,137 cars were bought on Saturday alone at the Motor Expo, a thirty percent increase from last year’s Father’s Day sales.

In the first few days of the Thailand Internaitonal Motor Expo, which will run until Sunday, a total of 9,146 cars were booked. Isuzu, the Japanese label focusing on trucks, took the lead with 1,342 registrations, followed by Toyota (1,256), Mazda (1,444) and Honda (1,129) and Nissan (828).

Car sales tend to spike on Father’s Day as many superstitious Thais believe it is a lucky day for them to buy a new car, with many showering their new purchases with flowers and blessings before they hit the road.

A total of 1,438 big bikes were also registered this weekend, said Kwanchai Prapaspong, the organizer of the Motor Expo.

Kwanchai believed the increased car bookings this year was caused by locals’ concern over the new car tax, which will come into effect next year. The tax could raise the price of a car by as much as THB200,000, he said.

More than 50,000 cars and 3,000 big bikes are expected to be sold by the end of the Motor Expo.
