BREAKING: Death sentence for Myanmar migrant workers over British backpacker murders

A Thai court sentenced two migrant workers from Myanmar to death on Thursday after finding them guilty of the 2014 murders of two British tourists on a holiday island.

Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun will appeal the verdict, BBC Thai reported.

Migrant rights activist Andy Hall Tweeted from the court: “Defense team respects court decision but moves to appeal verdict. Defense position is prosecution didn’t prove beyond doubt the main charges.”

Michael Miller, David’s brother, said: “We hope the campaigners who have relentlessly publicised this case, will respect the process of law and the decision of the court. We believe the correct verdict has been reached.”

“Over the last few months we have attended many of the court sittings and we have gained real respect for this court.

“The judges have been invariably diligent, attentive, fair and extraordinarily hard-working. This has been a comfort to us.

“David always stood up for justice, and justice is what has been delivered today. We respect this court and its decision completely.”

The verdict follows an investigation and trial that was mired in controversy, including allegations of police incompetence, mishandling of evidence and torture of the suspects.

Backpackers Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were found dead on a beach on the island of Koh Tao in September 2014.

Following weeks of pressure to solve the case, police arrested Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun and said the two had confessed to the crimes. Both later retracted their confessions saying they had been made under duress.

Michael Miller, David’s brother, said: “We hope the campaigners who have relentlessly publicised this case, will respect the process of law and the decision of the court. We believe the correct verdict has been reached.”
