Gold Diggers: Chinese gang busted buying gold with fake credit cards

The arrest of two Chinese tourists trying to buy gold on New Year’s Day has led Thai police to what appears to be a credit card fraud ring operating in Thailand.

Police were alerted by Siam Commercial Bank officers on Friday after two Chinese men tried to buy gold at a shop in Big C Ratchadamri using a fake credit card.

One of the men, Zu Jian, was arrested at the scene, while his companion, Cui Yuan Chang, escaped.

Police later arrested Cui at his hotel in Sathon, where they found him about to drive away on a car with a Chinese license plate.

The license plate led them to Tan Guo Ping, who rented the car from China and was staying at another hotel in the same district.

Further investigation led to the arrest of two more scammers: Zhu Guo Ping and Lui Shijin.

The five of them were found in possession of 182 fake credit cards, 11 fake passports and machines for making credit cards.

Investigation is ongoing as police believe there are three more people involved.

The gang confessed they would buy gold and sell it for cash in Thailand. They have been in and out of the country several times in the last eight months and racked up around THB180 million in fraudulent credit card charges, Khaosod English reported.
