A total of 380 people died on Thailand’s roads over the New Year’s holiday period, according to the Road Accidents Prevention Center.
An additional 3,505 were also injured over the seven-day period, which started on Dec. 25, in 3,379 road accidents throughout the country, Thai PBS reported.
Yesterday alone there were 287 road accidents which killed 40 and injured a further 289.
The leading causes of the accidents were drunk driving and speeding, authorities said.
The National Council for Peace and Order says it arrested 21,690 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol between Dec. 25 and Jan. 2.
Nakhon Ratchasima province had the highest number of road deaths with 15 killed, while Chiang Mai had the highest number of road accidents, with 139 incidents.
The number of road fatalities was up slightly from last year’s New Year’s holiday period, where 367 people were killed and 3,344 injured in a total of 3,174 accidents.
