Cold snap: Bangkokians share their excitement about the cool weather

Stepping out the door in Bangkok this morning, a surprisingly cool wintry breeze hit our faces and our collared shirts actually lasted for more than five minutes without getting any sweat stains. This was huge news.

Bangkok temperatures plunged to 16°C today, and the streets were filled with Bangkokians sporting colorful winter attire, from simple scarves to sweaters, and fake fur. On top of that, we found ourself rushing into the air-conditioned buildings to keep warm… and not to stop our faces melting as usual.

Because the capital is so rarely this chilly, today we asked locals how they felt about experiencing the biggest weather phenomenon of the year so far.

“I’m surprised at how cool it is today. I dug out this jacket from my closet that I hadn’t worn in awhile. Finally, I can wear it outside and not just in my air-conditioned office.” – Praewphan Tansanga, 25, graphic designer

“It’s winter in Thailand!” – Vorakorn Sirisorn,  22, Season 10 winner of The Star singing competition TV show

“I like the feeling that I have to rush inside a building to get warm. It feels like I’m living abroad.” – Phanuphan Veeraphushit (left), 24, journalist

“I never expected temperatures this low in Bangkok. I actually don’t like the cold weather because it makes me not want to do anything or even move. But a good thing about it is I got some use out of my poncho.” – Suphinya Nakmongkol (right), 26, journalist

“It’s bearable. Surprising, but bearable.” – Piyawat Chartipak, 22

“Winter can’t beat the man out of me.” – Parn Rienkijkarn (left), 23, student

“Winter fashion in Bangkok, baby!” – Gloriana Monzon (middle), 22, student

“The cold never bothered me anyway.” – Minmint Santivitoonvongs (right), 22, student

“Winter has finally arrived.”  –  Nattapan Jariyawittikul, 21, student.

“It took me almost two hours to get up and take a bath. I can feel my bones are frozen and I can’t move. I’m quite surprised it’s so cold because Bangkok is always hot. I actually didn’t believe the forecast until I experienced it myself.” – Ju Apilaporn, office worker
