Cute little Sunshine Café serves up serious comfort food

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Depending on which direction you’re looking at Witthayu Road, there’s either a jungle of busy office buildings or some ultra-high-security government establishments. Quite clearly, it’s no place for wild peeps to have a crazy night out or an adventurous date.

But just maybe, it could offer a quiet little hideaway to seek some peace away from the chaos of the city?

The answer is yes.

Located in a small peaceful soi of Witthayu 1, cozy little eatery Little Sunshine Café offers plenty of yummy goodies and a whole lot, metaphorically speaking, of “sunshine.” To my surprise, I found the café perfectly isolated from all the hecticness of the nearby area, and is just wonderfully peaceful.

Opened a few months ago, the café is manned by the bubbly owner herself and only a few other staff. Seeing how dedicated she is to making sure every customer is content, I correctly guessed the café  is her first outlet. This totally explains her special attention to detail and kind hospitality.

When it comes to the food, I could feel the positive energy from the staff flowing into the dishes. The many dishes I tried overturned my preconceptions of cafe food, which I’ve normally found to to consist of cold dishes, microwaved meals, or at best, a handful of good-looking toast dishes and salads. Not this place: it serves up serious food, which tastes excellent.

The menu is clearly the product of some serious home cooking, For example, their braised pork ribs with shiitake mushrooms, served with rice (THB155) must have taken hours in the hot kitchen to come out so tender and rich. Their namprik ong pasta (THB185), a basic Italian dish spiced up with Thai chili paste, tastes like real namprik ong, not some tomato and meat sauce you can whip up in one pot.

As if the taste wasn’t already a pleasant surprise, I find the portion size generous too. The fillet in the spicy fried rice with salmon and herbs (THB175) was huge, as you can see from my photo.

Meanwhile my favorite new find, the spicy three-egg pasta (THB180) has a sauce rich with Mentaiko, fish roe, and onsen eggs — extremely tasty.

One thing for sure, Little Sunshine Café offers good value for money. I don’t think I would save a single baht cooking up something like this for myself at home. I would return for the food, or even just a cup of coffee and some peace and quiet: try their sea salt caramel mocha (THB105).

For bakery fans, the café has a selection of cute little bite-size sweet cups. It’s hard to predict what they have on any given day, but when I visited I tried their s’more Nutella cookie cup (THB75), which oozed dark chocolate sauce.

My only complaint is the place is closed on Sunday and evenings, closing at 4pm. It would otherwise be a perfect spot to spend a long relaxing afternoon with a nice book, or meet up some friends for an evening meal. For now, it’s just my weekday early afternoon city escape — but it could be so much more. Keeping my fingers crossed for a Sunday opening soon.
