Surf with speed: Don Mueang crowned airport with world’s fastest WiFi

Despite Thailand being looked down on by many for its slow internet, Rotten WiFi, a website which tests internet speeds, has ranked our own low-cost hub Don Mueang as the airport with fastest WiFi in the world.

In the “Top 20 best WiFi airports in the world of 2015” report released last month, Don Mueang International Airport was described by Rotten WiFi as having quality WiFi “with zippy speeds that left European airports in dust.”

Really?

The rankings were based on surveys of traveler’s experiences and internet speeds tested in 185 airports worldwide.

Don Mueang, one of the two airports serving the Thai capital, offers two hours of free WiFi to travelers and recorded an average download speed of 42.22 Mbps (upload speed was slightly higher, at 42.28 Mbps).

Rotten Wifi said not all airports provide a free WiFi service, and when they do, connections can be frustratingly slow and patchy.

America came in second place with the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas. The small airport, which bills itself as having “the nation’s fastest, free airport WiFi,” has an average download speed of 36.23 Mbps and is followed in third place by Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Four other Thai airports also made the top 10 best airport WiFi speeds in the world, including Chiang Mai International (5th), Hat Yai International (7th), Chiang Rai International (8th) and Suvarnabhumi Airport, down from its last year’s top spot to ninth place.
