Swedish cops come to Thailand to investigate bookseller who went missing from Pattaya

Swedish police have come to Pattaya to investigate the disappearance of a bookseller.

Gui Minhai, who is a naturalized Swedish citizen, went missing from his Pattaya holiday home last October.

Staff at his holiday home said Swedish investigators came to the flat yesterday and took surveillance footage, Hong Kong Free Press reported.

Gui is one of five members to have gone missing from a Hong Kong bookstore that specialises in selling gossipy political books on China’s ruling Communist Party leaders.

The publisher was reportedly planning a new book on the private life of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Meanwhile Chinese rights activist Li Xin went missing in Thailand on Jan. 11 after leaving Nong Khai for Laos. He had hoped to return to Thailand to seek political asylum, Reuters reported.

Li’s wife said Thai police refused to accept her report of her husband’s disappearance and asked her to contact the Chinese embassy.

Fears have been raised that the missing men were abducted by Chinese agents.

Earlier this month, Gui appeared on Chinese state television claiming he had “voluntarily” turned himself into authorities there.

He said he had returned to answer a conviction from 2004 for killing a student during a drink-driving accident.
