Homemade ice cream and warm cookie dough at ‘Creamery’

COCONUTS HOT SPOT —  After the chilly breeze passed through Bangkok a few days ago, the usual heat, and my craving for cool ice cream, came back faster than The Flash. This calls for a countermeasure — one named “Creamery.”

Located at Chulalongkorn University’s U-Center, cozy ice cream parlour “Creamery” is a popular stop for Chula kids and high schoolers wanting an affordable dessert session after classes.

Besides the usual coffees and hot chocolates, people come to Creamery for its famous dessert — the freshly baked cookie dough topped with ice cream. The highlight of this large filling treat is that it is served in a searing hot pan, where the magic happens.

First things first, there are four types of cookies to choose from: the classic butter cookie, a brownie, a chocolate-filled “Choc-a-lot,” and the popular green tea flavor “Monster Matcha.”

The cookie and ice cream comes in two sizes, normal (THB89 – 169) which is perfect for a cozy party of one or two, while the large size (THB339 – THB399) could easily fill up 3-4 people. You will never finish a large on your own — trust me, I’ve tried it before. So if you want to try the bigger size, I’d recommend taking a few friends with you.

As for the ice cream, Creamery offers a wide variety of homemade treats, with fun distinctive names like “Counter-strike,” a pistachio and caramel fudge flavor combination, and “Zombie food,” a passion fruit and jelly flavor.

Since I went alone on my visit, I ordered the classic cookie dough with “White Wedding” vanilla ice cream (THB89). You can also get extra toppings including corn flakes, sprinkles, and syrups.

The smell of cooking dough fills the small shop, and the quiet and relaxing atmosphere makes you forget about all the heat and hurry of the city.

Be careful not to get burnt on the hot pan.

The cookie dough is very soft and warm, with the ice cream just melting as it’s served. The “White Wedding” flavor tastes like buttery cake, and it’s the perfect amount of sweetness.

As the melting ice cream starts to mix with the dough, the dish becomes even more creamy and delicious, and is guaranteed to fill you up after you gobble it all down.

As a Chulalongkorn student, Creamery has become a top spot for me to come for ice cream after classes for its exceptional quality and cheap prices.

Other than the original branch at U-Center, Creamery has four other shops at Ari Soi 1, Tha Maharaj, Kasetsart University, and Thonburi Soi 5.  So if you’re ever in these areas, don’t miss this delicious treat.
