2nd Zika case confirmed in Thailand

Thai officials have confirmed the second case of the Zika virus in the country this year.

The patient, a 20-year-old man, has recovered from his illness after being admitted for treatment on Jan. 24 at Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital on Phahonyothin Road, Khaosod English reported.

The first Thai case was reported earlier this month when a 24-year-old Thai man travelling to Taiwan for work was confirmed to be infected with the mosquito-borne virus.

Yesterday the World Health Organization declared Zika an international public health emergency after it was linked to thousands of birth defects, mostly in Latin America.

But last week Thai health officials said there was no outbreak of the virus in Thailand and urged people not to panic.

Zika symptoms are usually mild and similar to dengue, which is transmitted by the same mosquito.

It can cause mild fever, rash and red eyes, although around 80 percent of people infected have no symptoms.

There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, and prevention efforts focus on protecting people from mosquitoes and reducing mosquito populations.
