It’s a knockout: Enjoy fights and performances at Muay Thai Day

Get into the fighting spirit as Muay Thai Day comes to Bangkok.

The Culture Ministry is organising a day of activities this Saturday to mark the occasion, which will include a mass “Wai Kru” ceremony where boxers will pay respect to their teachers.

There will also be fights and performances, with “One Round Knockout” matches.

Culture Minister Weera Rojpojanarat said the aim was to promote the sport and its popularity worldwide.

He said there were over 240 Muay Thai gyms in Thailand and 27 others across the world, including in China, the UK and Brazil.

“The Prime Minister’s policy is for teachers to encourage students to learn Muay Thai in school, if only for self defense,” he said.

“For professional boxers, he has asked that more opportunities be created for them to compete. From this year onward, the ministry will seek to ensure that Muay Thai remains a defining characteristic of the Kingdom that is preserved by all.”
