Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year next week

Gong Xi Fa Cai! One of the most culturally vibrant events in Bangkok returns next week.

Chinatown will hold Chinese New Year celebrations on Monday and Tuesday, giving Bangkokians the chance to watch cultural performances, eat yummy Chinese food and celebrate the Year of the Monkey.

This year the capital is spending THB4.9 million to put on performances from China in Bangkok’s Chinatown including acrobatics, dance and musical shows.

Chinese New Year’s Day, or Wan Trut Chin in Thai, takes place on Monday. Traffic in the area will be closed to make way for the grand celebration.

The celebrations would not be complete without New Year’s prayers and Bangkok will bring Thailand’s first statue of Jao Por Heng Jia, the Chinese Monkey God, from his shrine at the Golden Buddha Temple to the festival so celebrants can pray to him.

The statue was first brought to Thailand from China about 200 years ago during the King Rama II era.

The city will also give away 8,500 Monkey God coins as souvenirs for visitors.

Chinese New Year activities will be held throughout Chinatown from the Royal Jubilee Gate to Chaloem Buri intersection. Roads will reopen for traffic on Wednesday at 6am, Daily News reported.
