Spaniard arrested over murder of man found in Chao Phraya says he’s innocent

The prime suspect arrested over the murder of a man whose body parts were found in the Chao Phraya River, claims he is innocent.

Spanish national Artur Segarra, 37, was arrested in Cambodia and flown to Bangkok yesterday over the murder and dismemberment of fellow Spanish businessman David Bernat, 40.

During questioning by Thai police he admitted he knew the victim but denied any involvement in his murder, the Nation reported.

Investigators said forensic evidence and statements from witnesses pointed to the suspect being Bernat’s killer. They also detected THB37 million being transferred from the victim’s Singapore bank account to the suspect’s account.

Police believe Bernat was abducted and tortured before he was suffocated to death. He was then dismembered and his body parts dumped in different locations of the Chao Phraya River.

Segarra is accused of his murder and of burying, hiding, moving and destroying the body to conceal the cause of the death. He has also been charged for overstaying his visa.

He allegedy fled to Cambodia by motorbike from Surin province after locals identified him as a suspect.

Segarra was arrested in Cambodian resort town Sihanoukville, from where sources said he planned to travel to another destination by sea.

His Thai girlfriend, Pridsana Saenubon, is also being questioned.

The police investigation continues.
