Fever pitch: Over 8,000 cases of dengue in Thailand so far this year

More than 8,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Thailand in the last two months, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

A total of 8,651 people have been infected this year with dengue fever, resulting in one death.

Health officials say this puts Thailand on track to have an infection rate as severe as that of 2013, when more than 150,000 people were diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease.

Public health agencies have been tasked with raising awareness of how to destroy mosquito breeding grounds around homes, schools and offices.

The news followed a call by health experts last week for urgent action to tackle the global pandemic, as the number of cases was expected to spike in some countries this year party due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, Reuters reported.

Experts urged governments to combat the spread of the disease in Asia, with 67 million people infected per year — the highest incidence of dengue in the world.
