Zip-line operators in Chiang Mai have improved safety measures after a series of accidents in recent months resulted in deaths and injuries.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is now planning to introduce new laws to regulate the service and increase safety and tourism confidence, Thai PBS reported.
The regulations include checking equipment before allowing tourists to use them, improved brake systems and extra safety slings.
Trees have been covered in impact absorbent cushions, the degree of incline on the zip-lines has been adjusted, and improved safety protocols for staff have been put in place.
All operators in Chiang Mai have reportedly now adopted these safety practices in line with international standards.
The Tourism Ministry said it hoped the new safety regulations would boost Thailand’s status as a leading destination in the adventure tourism market.
Around 300,000 visitors use the zip-lines in Chiang Mai each year, with more than half of them being Chinese tourists.
