Special investigator team probes fatal car accident involving high-profile Mercedes driver

A special investigating team has been appointed to investigate the fatal car accident in Ayutthaya in which a luxury car dealership owner slammed his Mercedes into another car on Sunday, killing two people inside.

Deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Pongpat Pongchareon ordered the case to be transferred from the local district police in Ayutthaya, where the accident occurred, in order to ensure fairness in the investigation, Thai PBS reported.

The move came after Ayutthaya police were heavily criticized for a delay in the investigation, with people taking to social media to express their concern this could be another case where a high-profile person escapes punishment due to their social status.

The Mercedes driver, Jenphop Weeraporn, 37, sustained slight injuries and was finally charged with reckless driving that caused the deaths of two masters students, Kritsana Thaworn and Thanthapat Horsaeng, four days after the accident.

Ayutthaya police traveled to question him at Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok where he is receiving treatment.

It was reported that Jenphop was not tested for drugs or alcohol on the day of the accident because his family immediately transferred him from a local hospital to Samitivej.
