Manhunt: British man flees after allegedly killing 2 Thais in car crash

Police in Chiang Mai are hunting for a British man who allegedly fled after he crashed his Mercedes-Benz into the back of a pickup truck, killing two people on Wednesday night.

Officials said they had found a British passport in the wreckage of the white Mercedes in the name of Simon Wellings.

Police arrived at the scene in Chiang Mai’s San Sai district to find an Isuzu pickup truck overturned on the road, while the Mercedes-Benz was in a ditch on the roadside.

Two Thai women, Pattaraporn Inthajak, 54, and Janthiang Changprakob, 50, were reportedly thrown from the pickup and officers found them lying on the road.

Police found a British passport in the name of Simon Wellings, a laptop computer, Chinese money, sunglasses, credit cards, a first aid kit and a mobile phone inside the Mercedes.

“Judging by the damage to the Mercedes, we are amazed that the driver was able to leave the scene,” said deputy police superintendent Lieutenant-Colonel Pongsak Reunkaew.

Another car, which was tailing the Mercedes, couldn’t stop in time and ended up hitting the truck. The sedan driver Sukij Simakul was slightly injured, reported the Nation.
