Prayuth promotes deep thinking for students

After generations of Thai educators telling students to memorize and write down every word they say, Prayuth’s new mission is to change the “Thai way” of studying.

As a new school semester starts today, Prayuth has urged educators to move toward an educational philosophy that encourages more critical thinking.

Last week, he instructed The Ministry of Education to move forward with a policy designed to encourage students to do less traditional studying and memorization and more creative, cognitive and critical thinking, according to government spokesperson Maj-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

This sort of thinking can help students develop the skills needed to do more troubleshooting and problem-solving after they graduate.

Though there has been less focus on this type of learning in Thai schools in the past, Maj-Gen Sansern noted that the new policy will encourage school educators and administrators to promote more critical thinking in schools and classrooms, Thai PBS reported.

But what might happen if students start thinking critically about their current government and its leader?
