Peru’s volleyball coach: ‘Thailand is the best team in Asia’

Despite the disappointing and controversial way that Thailand’s women’s volleyball team lost their chance to compete in the Rio Olympics to Japan last week, the team (and all of us) can take solace in the idea that the world saw how skilled our team is.

The Thai team will not get an Olympic berth in Rio de Janeiro since they were eliminated last Wednesday, but the team played on in the Tokyo qualifying rounds out of pride and love of the game.

One of those rounds was against the Peruvian team on Sunday. The Thai team won against Peru with scores of 25-17, 26-24, 25-23, even though some of their best players sat the round out.

Peruvian coach Mauro Marasciulo of said afterwards, “I’m happy Peru got the chance to play in this competition. I think Thailand is the best team in Asia. They beat Korea and played Japan close,” according to the Bangkok Post.

Overall, the Thai team finished fifth out of eight teams. The teams that will go on to the Rio Olympics are: Italy, the Netherlands, South Korea and Japan.
