Seventy-seven girls, from the 77 provinces of Thailand, competed for the title of the most beautiful woman in the kingdom last night but, truth be told, all eyes were on the girls’ flamboyant costumes inspired by the symbols of their provinces.
The costume that stole the show was the entrant from Roi Et province’s buffalo costume, which was was inspired by the province’s famous jasmine rice. Buffalo, the animal that helps farm rice by pulling plows and turning soil in the fields, has been given the much-deserved recognition here.
Another much-discussed costume was from Nakhon Ratchasima — a warrior look inspired by their heroine Thao Suranari or “Grandma Mo,” wife of Nakhon Ratchasima’s deputy governor in 1700s. Grandma Mo saved her city from an invasion by leading the imprisoned men and women to kill their enemies in their sleep. #Slay.
While other provinces went all-out with their costumes, Bangkok unveiled a simple Dusit-style traditional outfit from the Rattanakosin era.
While some say Bangkok’s outfit was too ordinary, it did its job of representing the glory of the city. The outfit originated in the years when Bangkok (known as Phra Nakhon back then) was the newly-established capital, taking the place of the ruined Ayutthaya.
Despite all the stunning outfits, the crown went to Miss Songkhla, Supaporn “Fai” Malisorn, 22, who is a professional model.
Supaporn took home a THB1 million cash prize, a house, a car, and a scholarship to get a master’s and doctoral degree from Bangkok Thonburi University. because being pretty is just not enough.
Miss Grand Thailand contest has no runner-ups, but four other honorable mention awards went to Miss Ratchaburi, Miss Singburi, Miss Chonburi and Miss Petchburi, according to Thai News Agency.
