Apichatpong Weerasethakul is the first Thai to join Academy and vote on Oscars

Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul is officially the first Thai invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. He was invited by the Academy yesterday.

The director, who won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 for “Uncle Boonmee,” is one of 683 people invited to join the Academy for 2016. This group will decide the Oscar awards for this year.

Apichatpong has directed not only “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives,” but also, “Mysterious Object at Noon,” “Blissfully Yours,” which won the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival; “The Adventure of Iron Pussy;” “Tropical Malady,” which won the Prix du Jury at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival; “Syndromes and a Century,” which was nominated for the Leone d’Oro (Golden Lion) at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival; “Mekong Hotel;” and his latest, 2015’s “Cemetery of Splendour,” which screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was voted critics’ favorite.
