Shoppers fall into canal as wooden walkway in Bang Phli market collapses (VIDEO)

Dozens of shoppers landed in a meter-deep canal as a wooden walkway at the 100-year-old Bang Phli market in Samut Prakarn collapsed yesterday, causing injury to two people.

The ancient walkway, estimated to be 10 meters long, gave way under the weight of the large crowd doing their Sunday shopping. About 20 stunned shoppers fell into the murky water, as seen in this surveillance footage.

The crowd, comprised of both locals and foreigners, were helped out of the canal. Some were aided in the retrieval of their belongings as they struggled to remain standing amidst the commotion.

The two who sustained injuries were Wiraya Panyawiboon, 25, who suffered from a swollen right foot, and an unnamed 25-year-old Thai man who sustained multiple cuts to his body. They were quickly brought to the hospital, reported Daily News.

The old wooden walkway has been repaired occasionally. It was believed that the ancient wood simply could not handle the weight of the crowd.

The Bang Phli municipal authorities have sealed off the area as the cause of the collapse is being investigated.
