The Canadian man wanted in Singapore for allegedly robbing Standard Chartered Bank and walking away with SGD30,000 (THB782,000) has been arrested in Bangkok, Singapore officials confirmed yesterday.
The suspect, who has been identified as 26-year-old David James Roach, reportedly flew to Bangkok Thursday afternoon, the same day he allegedly committed the robbery. He was arrested on Sunday at Boxpackers Hostel, in Ratchathewi, and is now in the custody of Immigration Department.
According to Asia One, the suspect managed to pull off a bank heist by simply slipping a note to a teller at the Stand Chartered Bank at Singapore’s Holland Village demanding money.
The note read: “This is a robbery. I have a weapon. Give me money. Don’t call police.”
The female teller handed over the cash to him and the robber simply escaped on foot. He didn’t even have a getaway car.
Roach reportedly refused to talk to the Thai police during questioning on Sunday and demanded to meet an officer from the Canadian embassy, but he couldn’t because the embassy was closed on Sunday.
It is unclear if the embassy ever got in touch with him.
According to Channel News Asia, Roach has visited Thailand many times, but his trip to Singapore, where he made off with a bunch of cash, was the first.
More details will be revealed at a press conference in Bangkok tomorrow.
