Heading to Hua Hin for the holiday? Watch out for wild elephants on the roadside

Those travelling to the Hua Hin area for the upcoming holiday should be aware that they might run into wild elephants foraging for food on the road between Nong Plab and Huey Satyai.

This route is popular with tourists since it takes them to Pa La-u Waterfall.

Park rangers in the area have expressed concern for any motorist who needs to use this road to reach the waterfall this holiday weekend since more and more wild elephants have been spotted wandering the road at all times of day or night, searching for discarded food or fruits.

Park ranger Sahat Kongsabai attributes the elephant movement as related to travelers tossing food on the roadside, attracting the elephants out of the forest.

This has become such a problem that, recently, an incident occurred where park rangers had to use firecrackers to chase wild elephants away from vehicles that were unable to move because the animals were blocking the road.

To ensure the safety of road users (and elephants), authorities have provided instructions for when an elephant has been sighted. Vehicles are advised to “wait until they (wild animals) move away from the road” before resuming their journey. Motorists have been advised to not engage the elephants in any way.

There have been no report yet on how officials plan to deal with this wild elephants problem, Thai PBS reported.
