Lonely Planet has just put out a new book called “The Best Things in Life are Free.” The book outlines the best — and cheapest — things to do in 60 international cities. It includes 18 places in Bangkok for people to visit to have great experiences for very little baht.
The gorgeous Artist’s House, where you can see traditional Thai art and a puppet show, tops the list. The book described it as, “a beautifully restored old home on the canal that a local artist renovated, in part to preserve the traditional structure and in part to open a gallery and art center.”
Other one-of-a-kind activities around the city that made the list were: free aerobics in the park, riding the Chao Phraya Express Boat, checking out Muay Thai fight night at MBK and taking a day trip to Koh Kret, home of traditional pottery and craft beer outpost Chitbeer.
As far as food, the entries aren’t free but they are cheap. The book suggests trying Pad Thai at the famed Thipsamai on Mahacahi Road, sampling the boat noodles near Victory Monument and feasting like a king at Yaowarat, reported Bangkok Post.
For those in search of temples and spiritual tourism, they add Wat Arun, the Golden Mount and meditation classes at Wat Mahathat to the list. To the people that want to pick up souvenirs on the cheap, they suggest Tha Phrachan amulet market, Chatuchak and Talad Rot Fai (the train market).
The new book noted that there are lots of wonderful things to do and see in Bangkok and, “The good news is that you don’t have to be rich to see these treasures; in Thailand’s City of Angels, you can eat like a king and see the sights on a shoestring.”
