More Thais booking vacays on their phones

According to new data, more people in Thailand use their phone to book their hotel stay, and that number should only increase over the next two years.

It just makes sense. Everyone is always on their phone anyway and many of today’s phones are more powerful than basic laptops. You have downtime on the BTS, in a cab or while waiting for a friend. So why not book a holiday?

“If tourists want to book accommodations, the most convenient way to do it is via their mobile phones,” said Parichat Haehnen, Booking.com’s regional manager for Thailand, Indochina and Myanmar.

Data recently released by her company said that one in every three vacationers globally books their hotel from a mobile device. That number rises to 50 percent for those taking short trips to nearby destinations, such as weekends away.

Parichat noted that the top five nationalities that use her site to book stays in Thailand are Chinese, Russian, German, Swiss and Brits.

However, Thai use of the site does go up when they are booking overseas. The most popular destinations are Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Laos, reported Bangkok Post.

She noted that Thai people travel more often within ASEAN countries because they rarely need visas. The fact that low-cost airlines abound and hotels can be booked via mobile make it all the more easier for Thai people to travel frequently around the region.
