‘Strong’ ballot box shatters along with Election Commission’s pride (VIDEO)

As the referendum vote is just around the corner, the Election Commission (EC) today showed off a new batch of “strong” ballot boxes, supposedly designed to ensure all of our votes will be well protected.

In a conference to encourage citizens to vote on the new draft constitution on Sunday, Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, member of EC, brought out a model of a new ballot box, which he said could last through elections for the next 10 years, carry up to 100 kilograms and handle temperatures of up to 56 degree Celsius.

Wow.

Somchai said each box costs THB244 and the EC decided to buy a new batch because the old ballot boxes were made of cardboard and only last for one or two elections (that we haven’t had one in a while.)

Somchai then tested his strong box for the press by throwing it around the room — just to have it land on the floor, shattered.

Post Today reported Somchai was a little shocked and said, “I threw it a bit hard, but when we use it, no one will throw a ballot box like this.”

Somchai then got a new box and throw it for the cameras again. He also stood on it to prove how durable the plastic is.

We didn’t make this up.
