Same, same: Street vendor eviction extended two weeks after every vendor in city ignores it

The eviction deadline for over 2500 vendors in four major street markets in Bangkok has been extended for another two weeks from the original date of August 1.

This was done after vendors in the street markets of Pratunam, Ratchadamri, Siam, and Silom ignored their eviction notices. A day after the original deadline, vendors were still seen in all four markets operating as per normal, reported Khaosod English.

Despite the authorities claim that they would not reconsider their deadline date, the Chairman of Advisers to the Governor of Bangkok, Vallop Suwandee, announced on Tuesday that City Hall would push their deadline another two weeks, changing it to August 15.

In their campaign to improve traffic on the streets for both cars and pedestrians, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has been attempting to remove the street vendors from the public sidewalks of the main street markets.

Those critical of the campaign reportedly say the BMA is trading away Bangkok’s charm for the sake of cleanliness and order.

According to Vallop, vendors in Saphan Phut Night Market who were given eviction notice for July 17 will be allowed to set up their stores along Saphan Phut road on the riverfront between two bridges, the Memorial and Phra Pok Klao for a temporary period until September 12.

Vendors on Sukhumvit road from soi 1 all the way to Bang Na were also told to leave the premises by September 5.
