World Tourism Day 2016 celebration to be held in Thailand despite explosions

World Tourism Day is coming up, something that might’ve slipped your mind after the tragic bombings that rocked Thailand last week. However, Thailand can’t be kept down for long, and it’s been confirmed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization secretary-general, Taleb D. Rifai, that Thailand will still host celebrate on September 27.

According to Rifai, Thailand still remains an important tourist destination.

To ensure the safety of tourists and Thai citizens, safety measures to be implemented by the Thai Government have been discussed by David Scowsill, the president and CEO of World Travel and Tourism Council, and Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, the Tourism and Sports Minister.

Minister Kobkarn also plans on inviting envoys from other counties to hear about the latest situation and what the government plans to do.

He noted that, this year, the number of tourists coming to Thailand has increased 20 percent to reach a total of more than 30 million people this year.

The addition of 825 tourist police will be added to the 900 men who are already based in tourist areas of the country, Thai PBS reported.
