Since Thailand’s tourism income is sure to suffer from the series of bombings in several popular beach destinations last week, the desperate government is considering giving us a long weekend next month so that we can go on vacation and spend some money.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will seek approval from the cabinet to make World Tourism Day (Tuesday, Sept. 27) a national holiday. They will also ask for an extra holiday on Monday, Sept. 26.
So that would leave us with a four-day holiday from Sept. 24-27.
The TAT is also planning to hold a tourism event in Hua Hin in the first week of September in an attempt to bring positive attention to the touristic site that suffered from bombings that killed four people and injured 20 more on Thursday.
Meanwhile in Bangkok, the TAT will also host a “Magnificent Thailand” event in early October where street food and a light show will be featured. For foreigners living in Thailand, there will be an “Expat Fun Fair,” a cultural activity targeted at expats who are encouraged to attend and “express their love of Thailand,” according to a TAT press release.
Previously, the TAT state governor Yuthasak Supasorn said that the attacks in Southern Thailand could potentially make the country lose over THB10 billion is revenue and 200,000 tourist visits in the upcoming months.
