Kasikornbank agrees to refund THB986,700 after customer staged a sit-in protest

A victim of fraud got a happy ending when Kasikornbank agreed to refund his giant THB986,700 loss. Pansuthee Meeluekit, the owner of a car accessory shop, became the victim of fraud when he accidentally made a business deal with a con man back in July.

The alleged con man, Sureekai Anumart, said he would buy Pansuthee’s products online and asked for his bank account and ID card numbers so that he could wire the money into said account. When Pansuthee updated his checkbook to see if the money came through, he was shocked when he found out that six withdrawals were made with a total of THB986,700.

Obviously, the con man used Pansuthee’s bank account and ID number to apply for a new phone SIM card, then changed the PIN number using the bank’s K-mobile Banking app, according to Thairath.

Pansuthee and his whole family decided to stage a sit-in protest in front of the National Police Office on Rama 1 Road, with each family member holding up a sign asking for help.

One of the signs read, “Please give me back my money. Please take responsibility and help me!”

On the same day, the senior vice president of Kasikornbank, Adis Laichuthai, reached out in response to Pansuthee’s plight and agreed to refund him for the amount stolen. The bank handed him a check, no strings attached, according to Thai PBS.

Easy to say, Pansuthee was all smiles when he received his check, thanking the bank for looking after their customers.

Victims of fraud are not rare in Bangkok. Adis thinks that Kasikornbank should consult with other banks as to how they could better help their customers and work out ways to close loopholes in order to prevent such incidents from recurring.
