Cute or cruel? Grandma calls for stray dog policy after toddler attacked by 7-Eleven dog

A woman has called for a policy to control stray dogs after her 3-year-old granddaughter was attacked by a pooch in front of 7-Eleven. Her story sparked controversy online last night.

Juthamas Tussana, grandmother of 3-year-old “Mook,” posted photos of her granddaughter’s multiple facial wounds from a dog’s attack, which she alleged happened Sunday in front of a 7-Eleven store in Soi Thakam, in Bang Khun Thian district.

The woman questioned who should take responsibility for her granddaughter’s injury and said that, in addition to the animal cruelty law, the government should issue another law to protect people from stray animals.

“Where do these dogs that sleep in front of 7-Eleven come from, and why hasn’t anyone done anything about this problem? People walk in and out of 7-Eleven 24/7, and if something like this were to happen again, who will take responsibility?” Juthamas wrote on her facebook page.

Juthamas told reporters the CCTV footage showed that her granddaughter did not harm the dog, but only stared at the animal out of fear, before the dog attacked her.

The 3-year-old sustained an eye injury and wounds on her face, according to Morning News.

Thailand is a society where cute stray animals have a Facebook page dedicated to them, but now the animals are getting negative attention online. This story was heavily discussed in popular Facebook community YouLike. The majority of commenters seemed to agree that it was time for the country to deal with the stray dog problem.

“In Japan, they don’t have stray dogs at all. Our country is so weird to love stray dogs. Why don’t you just properly adopt them?” a top comment said.

“Let’s protect all the dogs and say things like ‘Dogs only attack if you harm them’. Oh please, I was just out buying food and a herd of stray dogs ran at me. I didn’t do a thing,” another comment said.

Others said that these dogs are used to people, and don’t bat an eye as people walk in and out of 7-Eleven, steeping around, over or even on them. Others share their own experiences, saying that some of the dogs see the store as their own home and would bare their fangs at people who approach the door.

Nonetheless, as of this moment, the young girl is still in the hospital, recuperating from her injuries. The dog has reportedly been captured by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
