No more hot farang guards, Thai officials say they’re illegal

The Department of Employment has warned companies that hiring foreigners as security guards is illegal since those positions are limited to Thai citizens only.

According to the Chiang Mai Provincial Employment office, there have been a number of security service companies that secretly employ foreign workers to to work as security guards for the company’s clients. Unfortunately, that is illegal.

Yaowapa Pibulpol, the office chief, said that foreign workers can be employed only as laborers and domestic helpers. Hiring them for anything else goes against the Alien Working Act.

Anyone who wishes to work as a security guard must hold Thai nationality, a three-year license from the registrar, and pass the security training program from any certified establishment.

Any foreigner found working in the job of security guard will face a maximum five-year jail term and/or a fine of between THB2,000 to THB100,000.

The employers will also face a maximum fine of between THB10,000 to 100,000 for each foreign worker they hire, reported National News Bureau of Thailand.
