‘Kali’ the Indian rhino celebrates World Rhino Day with a big, rad feast

“Kali” the senior Indian rhino at Chiang Mai Zoo got a special serving of fruits and vegetables to celebrate World Rhino Day today.

Kali, who is now 31 years old, was given to Thailand by Nepal in 1986 when she was one year old. Kali is sadly the only rhino left in Thailand, according to Nipon Wichairat, Director of the Chiang Mai Zoo.

World Rhino Day celebrates all five species of rhino and raises awareness of the extinction risk that they face. Three of the five species of rhino are critically endangered.

Fun fact: Rhino is called rad in Thai. The word also doubles as an adjective for “bitchy” or “slutty.”
