Viral video: How many people can you cram into a public minivan?

In the latest viral video, Facebook user Wachuda, on the Tikky Ing Ing page, posted a 25-second clip of her recent uncomfortable minivan trip from Bang Na to the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The van she was riding in, designed to hold 16 passengers, had 21 onboard, and they were standing, hunched and uncomfortable-looking. Despite being full, the van kept stopping to pick up more people, reported Daily News.

The video, called “packed like sardines,” shows how full the can was. The people standing, of whom Wachuda was one, must have been blocking the driver’s view out the back windows to see what was behind him.

Despite this, Wachuda reported, he kept stopping to pick up more passengers. She said that her commute is like that every day and that there are too few vans and too many people that need to travel from that area. She complained that she has no choice but to ride the overpacked vans or risk being late to work.

Though her video got lots of attention online and had commenters, saying that officials should fix the unsafe bus situation. Land Transport department official, Sukree Jaruphum, who is in charge of minivans, did not know about the video.

He noted that this driver could be fined THB5,000 or have his license taken and that his company could face penalties as well. No charges have yet been filed against the driver or minivan company.

UBER might be more expensive but at least you don’t have to deal with a driver that won’t stop picking people up or a fellow rider doing something questionable with a Thai eggplant.
