VietJet adds daily Bangkok-Chiang Mai route, now 48 flights offered daily between the cities

Budget airline Thai VietJet Air has announced that they are adding regular daily services between Chiang Mai and Bangkok on Monday.

This brings the grand total of daily flights between the Thai capital and the popular Northern city up to 48 each day on seven Thai carriers.

That’s a lot of flights but the flights are not sitting empty, the demand for transportation to Chiang Mai seems to just grow and grow as Thais and tourists travel for business, pleasure and sightseeing.

In fact, most flights on this route, across all carriers, are 80 percent full, on average, reported Bangkok Post.

While the flights are usually at near capacity, the bigger issue is scheduling runway slots at Bangkok’s two airports for all of those flights.

The largest number of flights on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai route come from budget airlines that fly from Don Mueang.

These include: Thai AirAsia, who have 12 flights daily to Chiang Mai; Thai Lion Air, who have nine, Nok Air, who have seven; and Thai Smile who have eight but fly from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi.

Coming from Suvarnabhumi, Thai Airways has four daily flights to Chiang Mai while Bangkok Airways has six. Despite being a low-cost carrier, Thai VietJet has decided to fly from Suvarnabhumi

Bangkok to Chiang Mai is the country’s second most-popular domestic route, Bangkok-Phuket is the most popular, with 50 flights offered daily.
