Two German vacationers robbed on Khao San bus to Chiang Mai

Two vacationers from Germany claim they were robbed of EU550 (THB21,386) on a sketchy bus from Bangkok’s backpacker district to Chiang Mai.

On Tuesday, the pair bought inexpensive bus tickets on Khao San Road. The tickets were to Chiang Mai and for a bus due to depart on Wednesday.

Police say that the bus they rode was unregistered and possibly used as part of an ongoing scam to rob tourists, reported Thairath.

The two Germans are Jurgen Lotter 26, and Jemin Sippel, 26.

They were told that the bus would take them to the Chiang Mai bus depot but, instead, they were very surprised to find themselves left at a gas station in Saraphi.

As they prepared to leave the bus, they noticed that money was missing from both of their bags. The bus staff were not willing to assist them.

The Germans reported the incident to the police, who believe that the particular bus they took was used as part of a tourist scam and that “passengers” that got on along the way were part of the scam and went through tourists bags.

Police will use CCTV footage to try and find the thieves.

Unfortunately, the police said the same thing has happened many times.
