Security concerns over possible upcoming bombings may impact tourism

Tourism associations fear that tourists may skip visits to Thailand if their home countries publish travel advisories about the possible upcoming bombings as they did after the recent bombings of tourist towns.

“The tourism sector may suffer a huge negative impact if many countries issue travel advisories in relation to the warnings of bomb threats raised by the Thai police,” said Suparerk Soorangura, president of the Thai Travel Agents Association.

He said that if the bombing speculation goes international, tourists may re-plan their vacations to nearby countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia or the Philippines.

“Our high-season period will be badly affected if tourists do not make bookings,” he noted.

National police chief Pol. Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda confirmed the information about plots for three bomb attacks in Bangkok and the surrounding area between Oct. 25-30.

Police are investigating but would not comment on whether the suspects arrested on Tuesday might be connected to the bomb plot.
