Bhutan joins Thailand in a nationwide mourning for King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s passing

A message to the people was written on His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Namgyel Wangchuck’s Facebook page, reading “His Majesty The King received the news of the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand with immense sorrow.”

He went on to say, “The Royal Families of Bhutan and Thailand have shared exceptionally warm relations over the years, which have been mirrored by strong bonds of friendship between the two countries.”

Bhutan’s King has ordered for today to be a public holiday to give people leave from work to join in Thailand’s mourning.

In dedication to the memory of HM King Bhumibol, HM King Jigme had commanded that “special prayers be held, and butter lamps be lit in sacred temples across Bhutan.”

“For the next seven days, butter lamps will be lit and special prayers offered at Thimphu Tashichhodzong, Thimphu National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Lhakhang, Thai Pavilion, Centennial Park, Punakha Dzong, Trongsa Dzong, Trashigang Dzong, Paro Taktsang, Paro Kyichu Lhakhang, Tali Dratsang, Samtse Shiv Mandir, and Phuentsholing Zangtopelri.”

Pictures were posted on his Facebook page, showing him lighting candles and praying as well.

Many Thais who have seen this post have left heartfelt comments, thanking the Bhutanese monarch for his kind words and actions.
