Thais queue since 2am to buy King Bhumibol’s commemorative banknotes

Thousands of Thais lined up at the headquarters of the Government Savings Bank in Phaya Thai to buy HM the King’s limited commemorative banknotes this morning.

When the sales opened to the public, some people had reportedly been queuing since 2am. There were only 90,000 bills for sale.

The bills, which show a denomination of THB100 and are sold in a commemorative paper cover, cost THB200 and sales are limited to five bills per person. The bill in an acrylic frame costs THB500 and those are limited to one bill per person.

A Coconuts reporter arrived at the bank at 7:30am to queue up. She finally got to buy the bills at 10am.

The line reportedly stretched from the bank onto Paholyothin road as of this morning.
