Bangkok’s new governor Aswin Kwanmuang has said that he is not a part of any political party and wants to make his tenancy about managing the city’s traffic issues, making sure that people have shelter and paying respect to the late king.
He’s also promised to be dedicated to his new role and to “not waste taxpayers’ money.”
Ouch.
You see, Pol. Gen. Aswin was appointed yesterday to replace the suspended Sukhumbhand Paribatra, who is being investigated for misappropriation of emergency funds and was infamous for many alleged incidents of overspending, including on an office renovation that cost taxpayers THB16.5 million.
Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha used the power granted to him by Section 44 of the interim constitution to remove Sukhumbhand and appoint Pol. Gen. Aswin to the governor position on Tuesday, reported Bangkok Post.
Pol. Gen. Aswin is now in the process of creating a group of four deputies to work beneath him. He said that his proposed tem would be sent to Prayuth for approval by the end of the week. He also said that he will avoid candidates with political affiliations.
The new governor is part of the National Reform Steering Assembly and has stated that he will neither leave or reorganize that group.
