Sayonara Sukhumbhand! Suspended spendy governor says goodbye to Bangkok

Suspended city governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said goodbye to Bangkok residents via Facebook message yesterday after being officially replaced by Pol. Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang, the former deputy governor.

Junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha on Tuesday employed Section 44 to remove Sukhumbhand and appoint the replacement.

In the online message, the former governor congratulated the new governor and offered his support, as well as thanking Pol. Gen. Aswin for his help over the years.

Sukhumbhand was elected twice as governor and served eight years in the office, where he ran the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). His message went on to thank all BMA staff for the past eight years of hard work.

“Most important of all, I would like to thank the people of Bangkok for electing me to work as Bangkok governor for two terms. At times of flood and political crises, all of you cooperated fully with the BMA. I will remember your kindness throughout my life,” read the message.

Although, if you recall, the former governor said that Bangkok did not experience flooding over the past year, the city just had “water to drain,” according to Sukhumbhand, whose heavy-handed running of the city and series of overspending and fund misappropriation is still the butt of jokes and an ongoing investigation.

The message went on, “I would like to bid farewell to you all who gave me the mandate to run the city administration for the past eight years, but I will not abandon my intentions to do good things for the Thai people, including Bangkokians.”

The appointment of Pol. Gen. Aswin as Bangkok Governor is based on his qualifications, according to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

Gen. Prawit noted that Prayuth removed Sukhumbhand from the position due to all of the legal actions against him. No word on what’s going to become of his flashy THB16.5 million office.
