Miss Thailand wins Miss Earth National Costume Contest, sits out swimsuit round out of respect for late king

Miss Thailand did the nation proud by winning the National Costume Contest on Monday in Miss Earth 2016, an international pageant contest held in Manila.

Atcharee Buakiew, 20, won the prestigious costume round with an over-the-top peacock outfit. In the North of Thailand, the peacock is a bird often seen that represents grace.

The victory could not come at a better time for Atcharee, who withdrew from the swimsuit competition on Oct. 14. She chose not to appear in swimwear as she mourned the death of late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away on Oct. 13, according to a statement on the official Facebook page of Miss Universe Thailand.

Atcharee is a student at Chiang Mai University and is on the Sufficiency Economy Scholarship program initiated by HM the Late King. His death had reportedly saddened her greatly.
