Bangkok collects 60 tons of krathong waste from waters

After a beautiful night at Loy Krathong festival, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration cleaned up the waterways and collected 60 tons of krathong waste from the city’s waters.

Bangkok Deputy Governor Jakkapan Pieungam said the city workers counted a total of 617,901 krathongs floated this year — that’s a huge drop of about 200,000 krathongs from last year.

The city deployed 210 workers to pick up krathongs from waters. They finished the work at midnight.

Thankfully, over 92.9 percent of people use natural krathongs while trying to keep traditions alive. The natural waste will be used to make fertilizers at a facility in Nong Kham.

The rest of plastic krathongs will be recycled.
