Passengers traveling in and out of Thailand must now pay an extra THB15 fee per person per flight, as the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand’s airport surcharge went into effect on Monday.

The surcharge will be added to your air ticket prices and the funds collected will go towards improvements to the country’s aviation system as overseen by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. The global aviation authority will also get a cut of the revenue.

Thailand is expected to welcome more than 32 million visitors and more than six million Thais will travel abroad, according to Tourism Authority of Thailand. This means the implemented surcharge will generate THB1.1 billion per year, reported The Nation.

The move, however, has irked Charoen Wangananont, the president of Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), who said, “If the government wants to solve aviation problem or develop further projects, it should grant a special budget and let the Thai authority do it, not ask for money from passengers.”

He added that experts working at the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand should be paid by the Thai government, not by passengers.
