TV English class features priceless Tinglish sentences

A TV broadcast of an English class has been heavily criticized on social media for totally failing on one objective — teaching proper English.

The class, hosted by Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep (RMUTK), had many Thais shaking their heads when it made very basic grammatical errors, teaching people to say awkward sentences such as “Are you and England?” or “Get on the car.”

According to the clip, which seems to be trying to curb Tinglish, the female teacher put an incorrect sentence at the top and the “correct” version at the bottom.

In one slide, the teacher even translated the English word “penis” as urine in Thai.

The episode was broadcast on DLTV 15 on Saturday.

Thairath online reported the channel may consider canceling the show. The teacher who hosted the class blamed someone else for the typos in her slides.

Last year Thailand ranked 62 out of 70 countries in the EF English Proficiency Index. However, the Education Ministry later announced that the project had to cut back on hiring foreign English teachers to save money.

Facebook user Sirikanda Arkem, a graduate from RMUTK, commented under the video that she had taken a class with this particular teacher and had to point out her mistakes in the class before. In the end, she had to make a complaint to the university.
