Bangkok cabbie returns 2.8 million baht’s worth of gold, cash to passenger

Bravo to another Thai taxi driver, who has lifted our faith in humanity by returning a lost fortune to his passenger.

A Bangkok taxi driver came forward to return nearly THB3 million worth of gold and cash to a female passenger who left them in his cab yesterday.

Police radio JS100 received a report from Patcharee Saelim, a 58-year-old owner of a gold shop in Petchabun province, who said she left a fabric bag containing THB255,000 cash and two kilograms of gold rings and necklaces in a cab. The property accumulated to a total of THB2,850,000.

Patcharee was convinced she forgot her bag of fortune in an orange cab, which she took from  from Mo Chit to Sri Ayutthaya intersection around 2am yesterday, so Bang Sue police tracked down the driver using CCTV.

Contacted by the police, the orange cab’s driver, Samart Ngernthong, said Patcharee left his cab with her suitcase and fabric bag, but he provided the police with another clue, which is that he put the woman in another taxi because he didn’t know the directions to Ratchawong Pier, which was her destination

Hope was lost, and police were checking if there was CCTV where Patcharee took her second cab.

However, the second driver Withit Daungjumphol, 34, reached out to JS100 himself after seeing the value of the forgotten property, and he was reunited with his forgetful passenger.

Patcharee rewarded Withit with a much-deserved THB100,000 in cash, and she also donated THB30,000 to a charity that gives away free wheelchairs to those in need.

The honest cabbie also donated THB10,000 from his reward money to the charity.

Meanwhile in Phuket, a taxi driver returned THB100,000 cash to an Italian tourist on the same day.
